What is the difference between public and private hydrants?

Fire hydrants that are installed on an individual's property are typically private, while public hydrants are those that are found in public areas and are maintained by the City. Typically, public hydrants are yellow and private hydrants are red.  Maintenance of private fire hydrants is the responsibility of the owner/occupant.
